The Yellowhammer state has many things to see and do. Northern Alabama offers hills and forests for hiking and climbing and a long string of lakes for water sports. Cheaha and DeSoto state parks showcase the state's highest point and deepest gorge, respectively, and camping and hiking are popular activities in these forested areas. Guntersville and Wheeler lakes are prime recreational waterways where swimming, fishing, boating, and water skiing are enjoyed almost year-round. Catch a glimpse into the future at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville; or visit some of Alabama's historic past at the W. C. Handy Home and Museum in Florence or at Ivy Green, the birthplace of Helen Keller, in Tuscumbia. Big-city life can be enjoyed in Birmingham, the state's largest city and home of the famous Vulcan statue. RandMcNally.com

I'd like to interest you in American Village near Montevallo. Almost exact duplicates of Mount Vernon and Independence Hall are open for tours. Actors dressed in period clothing add a real life touch to learning American history. The American Village is a great place to visit for anyone interested in American government and history. I'm a history buff, so this is the kind of stuff I dig. Virtual Tourist User
There are a lot of big name attractions around the state like the Space and Rocket Center but don't miss seeing some of the countryside and visiting some of the old homes that date back to the Civil War. Most have been restored and offer tours during the week.
All around the state you can find a few old homes here and there as well as antique shops and other small town mom and pop stores and eating establishments unique to the area.

Welcome to Alabama
Where else but Alabama can one find civil rights monuments and statues of Confederate soldiers within walking distance of each other? Montgomery, Alabama's capital, is home to the church where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. first preached and to the first White House of the Confederacy. Alabama's rich, turbulent history isn't, however, its main attraction. Many visitors head to the northern part of the state for the state and national parks around the southern tip of the Appalachian Mountains and for the Marshall Space Flight Center. The state's southern portion offers pleasant beach towns and, in February, the country's oldest Mardi Gras celebration.

Alabama State Capitol
The Alabama State Capitol was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962. Not only is Alabama State Capitol a revered symbol to thousands of Alabamians but a significant monument in American history. A major effort to rehabilitate the Capitol began in the 1970s. While most of this work was finished in 1992, efforts to restore and enhance the historical character of the building are ongoing by the Alabama Historical Commission.
